I have this soulful experimental gospel number on repeat. "Blood" is the first track to get an airing from London/NY based trio Algiers. They've been squirreling away at this and other upcoming tunes since 2007, and on first listen it's been worth the wait. When you manage to return to bristling London from the emotionally overwhelming world of slavery and civil-rights movements to which you will have been transported while listening to "Blood", you can turn your ear to "Black Eunuch" - the other track from the Blood 7-inch. "Black Eunuch" is a punkier, more upbeat number which may be more party-friendly but doesn't draw you into the another epoch of passion and history in the way that "Blood" does. Then again it isn't meant to.
The rest of the music they've put together over the last 5 years is due to end up on an LP before years-end. Hopefully they haven't been saying that for the last 5 years.
